Ride the Hills of Florence at Your Own Pace on a Self-Guided Bike Tour
Discover the best of Florence’s surrounding countryside at your own pace with this self-guided bike ride. Perfect for independent travelers, it combines scenic cycling, historic landmarks, and curated foodie stops – all in just half a day.
We start from the authentic Oltrarno neighbourhood, where you’ll be fitted with a high-quality 27-gear touring bike, helmet, and phone holder. Before setting off, we provide a detailed briefing and a custom-designed digital map with turn-by-turn navigation and suggestions for tastings, photo spots, and quiet corners to relax.
The ride covers about 8 miles along rolling Tuscan hills. Early on, you’ll pass through Porta Romana, the only Florence gate still enclosed by its 13th-century walls. A gentle climb (1.3 km / 0.8 mi) leads through a peaceful residential area into the countryside, where Florence fades into the distance.
Along ancient narrow roads, our map highlights optional stops: from a family-run olive oil estate with tastings of extra virgin olive oil, Chianti wine, and Tuscan bites, to charming countryside cafés and trattorias (note: the olive oil venue is closed on Mondays – in that case, alternate high-quality stops are suggested either in the countryside or back in Oltrarno.)
You’ll pass an ancient village where Galileo Galilei once lived, spotting the tower he used as an observatory. Near the end, pause at San Miniato al Monte, one of Florence’s most iconic viewpoints. The last stretch is all downhill back into the historic center.
Before returning your bike, reward yourself with a gelato at one of our favorite local spots (marked on your map).
This self-guided ride offers a refreshing way to escape the crowds and experience the beauty, history, and flavours of Tuscany at your own pace.
